Signs of Spring

Sunday 29 March 2009
A glorious day today, making up for the really nasty day on saturday. Rising temperatures and unbroken sunshine provided me with my first migrants of the year, heralded by a single Swallow near the Abbey in the morning and down on the lakes in the afternoon a couple of Wheatears and a Little ringed Plover. The tadpoles in the pond are now yolk free and wriggling about, no doubt providing food for the other emergent pond life. One of the  Muntjacs was again in Abbey road at around 4pm.

In and about

Monday 23 March 2009

Just outside the village this group of deer looking rather nervous caught out in the open and a group of Common Gulls near the house. They are not common round here.

The cold snap has seen all thirty one of our Common Frogs leave the pond, and, leave it full of frogspawn. Last year the Great Diving Beetle larvae (Dytiscus) ate all the small tadpoles but there is so much in the pond this year a few may survive

This Muntjac was crossing the road (to get to the other side) in mid afternoon. It's mate was still creeping around in the bushes. Seen in Abbey road.

Later at the local pub I was offered eight legs of venison for £80 and asked " is that too deer ?" !!!!
The start of my blog for wildlife and associated stuff round our village of Pentney.
